What the sauna sits on

The requirement behind the options

Strip away the materials and every maker asks for the same three properties: level, load-bearing and draining. Level because a sauna is joinery under tension, and a twisted base works every joint in the building. Load-bearing because the crate weight plus bathers is a real, concentrated load. Draining because the enemy of any wood building is water that stays. Gravel, pavers and concrete are just three prices for those same three properties.

The three common answers

• A compacted gravel pad is the budget answer that appears widely in maker guidance: excavate, frame, fill with crushed stone, compact and level. It drains by nature. The discipline is in the compacting and the levelling, because gravel done casually settles unevenly, and settling is the failure the base exists to prevent.
• Concrete pavers on a prepared bed sit between gravel and a slab on cost. Done on a compacted base they give a flat, hard surface that can be corrected later if anything moves. Done straight onto turf they are just heavy tiles on mud, and no manual accepts that.
• A poured slab is the permanent answer: most expensive, most level, zero seasonal drama. If the sauna site is also getting electrical conduit, pouring once with the conduit planned is tidier than retrofitting. A slab may also be the point where local rules take an interest, which is a call to your building office, not a guess.

Shape changes the conversation

A cabin spreads its weight along its walls like a small shed. A barrel concentrates everything through its cradle supports, which is why barrel manuals are specific about where the cradles bear. The practical consequence: a barrel pad must be flat exactly where the cradles land, and flat on average is not the same thing. Sizing the pad, from real footprints

The footprint row on each record is the building, not the installation. The pad needs the building plus the door swing, a walkway on at least one side, and clearance on the stove wall per the model's manual. For scale: the longest footprint in our database is Canadian Timber Tranquility CTC2345W at 9 ft 10 in by 7 ft 2 in, which is a different excavation from a compact two person barrel. Sequence, one more time

7 of the 15 saunas we track ship as kits, and a kit build is a weekend that starts well only if the base was finished the weekend before. Base first, cured and checked level. Then delivery, with the pallet landing as close to the pad as the driver can manage. Then assembly. Then the electrician, whose conversation you prepared with the electrical guide. The order never changes, only the dates do.
