Heater size for a shed sauna conversion

An eight foot shed converts to a far bigger heating job than its tape measure suggests: uninsulated surface inflates the effective volume into the largest heater class we track.

The scenario measures 13.6 m³ of hot room, which becomes 18.1 m³ effective volume after the published glass and wall adjustments. Harvia's 1 kW per m³ rule makes that about 18.1 kW minimum.

The adjustment is the whole story

The bare geometry here is under 14 cubic meters. The 40 square feet of uninsulated surface adds more than 4 effective cubic meters under the published rule, which is what pushes this scenario past every mid-size heater we track. Insulation, not a bigger stove, is the cheap fix.

Insulate first, then remeasure

This preset deliberately models the shed as found. Line and insulate the room, cut the uninsulated area you enter below, and the same shed can drop two heater classes. The calculator makes that arithmetic visible if you run it both ways.

A shed is not a kit

Sauna kits arrive as a designed hot room. A shed conversion inherits whatever the shed builder chose, which is why this is the one scenario on this site where the honest answer is a range plus a strong nudge toward insulating before buying anything.

Questions this size raises

Can I turn any shed into a sauna?

Structurally that is a question for the shed and local rules, and it is outside what we cover. What we can tell you is the heating math: measure the room, estimate the uninsulated area honestly, and match the result to a published heater range.

Why does insulation change the heater size?

Harvia’s published sizing rule counts each square meter of uninsulated surface as 1.2 extra cubic meters of room. Forty square feet of bare wall inflates a small shed by a third. The stove is sized for the effective room, not the measured one.
